A museum celebrating eroticism and mythology opened in the European capital Brussels just in time for Valentine Day (February 14).
‘에로티시즘과 신화’ 전문 박물관이 14일(현지 시간) 밸런타인데이를 맞아 벨기에 수도 브뤼셀에서 개장했다. 

Porcelain or ivory couples making love in all possible positions. Phallus in all shape, form and colours-- the museum is not for the faint hearted.
자기(磁器)나 상아 작품 속 커플들은 현실에서 실현 가능한 모든 체위로 사랑을 나눈다. 다양한 모양, 형태, 색상의 남근을 형상화한 작품들이 전시된 이 박물관은 부끄러움이 많은 사람들은 입장할 곳이 못된다. 

The Museum of Erotics and Mythology is the brainchild of Guy Martens, a former doctor who has been collecting 500 erotic objects for 40 years.
이 ‘에로티시즘과 신화 박물관(Museum of Erotics and Mythology)’은 전직 의사인 가이 마틴스(Guy Martens) 씨의 아이디어로 탄생했다. 그는 지난 40년간 에로틱한 작품 및 물건 500점을 수집했다. 

Martens said his collection is exceptional and includes many unique pieces, such as a 1830 condom in sheepskin.
마틴스 씨는 자신의 수집품이 매우 특별하다며 1830년대 양가죽 콘돔을 포함해 많은 독특한 물건들이 있다고 말했다. 

The oldest piece is a clay from Mesopotamia dating back to 4,000 century B.C. and the collection also includes contemporary art. 
이 컬렉션은 기원전 4000년으로 거슬러 올라가는 메소포타미아 시대 점토 작품부터 현대 미술까지 망라한다. 

Through the museum's three floors, visitors get an insight into sexuality from antiquity to today.
3층으로 된 이 박물관에서 방문객들은 고대부터 현재까지 각 시대의 성생활을 엿볼 수 있다. 

Martens said he couldn't have opened the museum ten or twenty years ago -- society was not ready.
마틴스 씨는 10~20년 전에는 사회가 받아들일 준비가 돼 있지 않았기 때문에 이러한 박물관을 열 수 없었다고 말했다.

"There is no taboo anymore and everyone is faced with sexuality, especially through advertisement so I think time has come to open such a museum," Martens said, standing next to his favourite statue of Attis -- a hermaphrodite God who castrated himself after being unfaithful.

“이제 더 이상 금기시되지 않습니다. 누구나 성적인 것과 마주합니다. 특히 광고를 통해서요. 그래서 이러한 박물관을 열 때가 됐다고 생각합니다.” 마틴스 씨는 자신이 가장 좋아하는 아티스 조각상 옆에 서서 이같이 말했다. 아티스는 자웅동체인 신으로 부정을 저지른 뒤 스스로 거세했다. 

Another of Martens' favourite piece is a mould of what he describes as the phallus of Russian courtier Rasputin. Many books speak about Rasputin's phallus in glowing terms, Martens said. According to those books, Rasputin's penis measured about 35 centimetres. According to Martens' own measurements, Rasputin's phallus is only" 28 centimetres.
마틴스 씨가 특히 좋아하는 또 다른 작품은 그가 ‘러시아의 수사 라스푸틴의 남근’이라고 묘사한 모형이다. 많은 서적들이 라스푸틴의 남근에 대해 찬사를 보낸다고 그는 말했다. 그러한 서적들에 따르면, 라스푸틴의 남근은 약 35cm이다. 하지만 마틴스 씨가 직접 재어 본 결과 라스푸틴의 남근은 28cm에 불과했다고 한다.

Rasputin was a Russian Orthodox monk who had great influence in the court of Russia tsar Nicolas II. His notorious relationship with the tsar's wife Alexandra contributed to the fall of the Romanov dynasty.
라스푸틴은 러시아 정교회의 수사(修士)로 러시아 니콜라이 2세 황제의 국정에서 막강한 영향력을 떨쳤다. 악명 높은 그와 알렉산드라 황후의 관계는 로마노프왕조의 몰락에도 영향을 끼쳤다. 

Visitors attending the exhibition were enthusiastic.
방문객들은 열광적인 반응을 보였다. 

"I went around, it wasn't that shocking. It is of course erotic but not pornographic so I think it is interesting because of the quality of the pieces being shown. I think it can be interesting though only for adults of course!," Guy Pirotton said.

“박물관 내부를 돌아다녀보니 그렇게 충격적이진 않았어요. 물론 에로틱하지만 외설적이진 않아요. 전시된 작품들의 특성 때문에 흥미로운 것 같아요. 물론 성인들에게만 흥미롭겠죠.” 

"Art is something what touches you from the first moment. And I think this museum really touches me by the diversity of figures and small and big pieces and history. Four thousand year before Christ and now," Vania Ivanova said.

For Martens, mythology is nothing more than stories about the sexuality of Gods and that mythology and eroticism are deeply linked.
마틴스 씨는 ‘신화란 신들의 성생활에 관한 이야기일 뿐’이며 신화와 에로티시즘은 깊은 연관이 있다고 생각한다. 

Eroticism comes from Eros, the Greek god of love.
에로티시즘은 그리스 신화 속 사랑의 신 ‘에로스’라는 단어에서 파생됐다.
